IC 405, aka the Flaming Star Nebula, is a large emission and reflection nebula complex. The bluish reflection nebula is background dust reflecting the light if the bright blue star AE Aurigae. The nebula is about 1500 light years distant, and 5 light years across. Proper motion studies of AE Aurigae indicate that it originated near Orion's Belt. IC 405 is also catalogued as SH2-229 and Caldwell 31.

This is a 2024 partial re-process of the 2015 image, using StarXTerminator and StarShrink to enhance the nebula.
