NGC 2237 is a large region of ionized hydrogen (H II) in Monoceros. It is about 5200 light years away, and estimated to be 100 light years in size. The cluster of stars near its center is catalogued as NGC 2244. The cluster is believed to have formed from the nebula's matter; it hosts several O-type stars which emit large amounts of UV radiation, responsible in large part for shaping the inner portions of the larger nebula. The two brightest stars in the cluster are 50+ times more massive than out sun, and several hundred thousand times brighter.
